HVAC Becomes MTI!

On July 1, 1999, HVAC Systems Service Inc. will change its name.  The firm, founded in April of 1989, began as a service provider for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units in the Industrial, Institutional and Commercial markets.  The new name Mechanical Technologies Incorporated (MTI), reflects the company's growth as a premier provider of full-service mechanical contracting.  MTI consists of three divisions:  the original service department, piping, and sheet metal.

This tremendous growth is due to HVAC Systems Services' dedication  to recognizing and servicing the needs of its customers.  Having started with five employees, MTI now employs over 25 people in three divisions.  When the company began providing sheet metal fabrication in 1992, a new 2,688 square foot office and shop was built in the Howard Industrial Park.  Several years later, a 3,360 square foot addition was completed to accommodate continual growth.

In March of 1998, Steve Peterson joined HVAC and the company opened its piping division.   Under Steve's direction and the work of four experienced and talented steamfitters, HVAC became a force in the piping market.  By September 1998, Steve became Rick's partner and Vice President.

As MTI moves into the new millennium it fully recognizes the challenges that lie ahead and the total dedication to technology and education needed to succeed.  Our new name, Mechanical Technologies Inc., is the first step in this process.

The new slogan, "Changing your environment", is also a continuation of this philosophy and has a dual meaning.  Our environment is very important to all of us, and we are committed to installing and servicing systems that operate at maximum efficiency to save money and resources.  Secondly, we are committed to providing the highest quality indoor air for the wellbeing of the occupants of the buildings we work on.  To do this, we utilize the newest technologies and continually educate our employees about new application methods.

We are very excited about our new name, Mechanical Technologies Inc., because it better identifies our role in the marketplace as a mechanical contractor dedicated to using technology to its fullest.  But we are even more excited about the future-finding solutions to our customers' problems, offering immediate response in emergency situations, being a leader in the field of mechanical contracting, and continuing to develop personal business relationships with our customers.

Back to the future

Past and millennium lead to name change

Welcome to the world of Mechanical Technologies Inc.  Ten years ago when HVAC Systems Service was formed, we had aspirations of becoming a full-service mechanical contractor, but quite honestly, our immediate goal was to turn a fledgling idea into a viable business.

Although out success is rooted in old fashioned hard work, looking back, it seems easy.  We took a one dimensional business with expertise in the service of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating, and grew it into a full-service mechanical contractor specializing in HVAC service and installation, piping, and sheet metal/indoor air quality.

The new Mechanical Technologies Inc. would not have been possible, though, without the help of dedicated employees who strive to exceed customers' expectations and the willingness of customers to embrace our new services.   We want to thank all of you for helping us to get where we are today.

Last summer, when our newest division, piping, was readily being accepted, it was evident we were outgrowing our name "HVAC Systems Service."  Preparing for Y2K and the new millennium also forced us to look at the future.  We came to the conclusion that  a new name which represents our growth and our commitment to technology.  In the end, we all agreed that MTI was a perfect fit.

As of July 1, 1999, the change will be official.   Be assured you will receive the same high quality service you have come to expect from us, but also be confident we are committed to the future as we continue on as MTI:   Mechanical Technologies Inc

TEAMWORK

Meet the MTI department heads...At MTI, our philosophy is to have strong leadership at all levels and in all three departments:   Service, Piping, and Sheet Metal/Indoor Air Quality.  Our ideal size gives us the advantage of maintaining close working relationships with clients and one another, while supplying the same full range of mechanical services offered by larger contractors.   At the hub of our operation are Steve Peterson, Vice President and Piping Superintendent; Jim Taylor, Service Manager; and Steve Gay, Sheet Metal Supervisor.

Steve Gay,  Manager Sheet Metal Division

One sign of a good team is that every member knows his or her role.  At MTI, nobody demonstrates this as well as Steve Gay, sheet metal division manager and 19-year member of the Local 18.

Steve describes his job simply as "working with the customers and managing the men."  MTI President, Rick Bushey says "Steve Gay gets the job done." Steve's leadership sets the pace for continued growth in the sheet metal division.

Steve counts cars, boating, and quad-racers among his hobbies.  In characteristic straightforward fashion, he says the most challenging aspect of his job "finding that area where both the men who work for me and the men I work for are happy!"

Jim Taylor, Service Manager

In a company founded on service, the importance of the service manager cannot be overemphasized.  At MTI, that job falls to Jim Taylor.  The Upper Peninsula native says the key to great service is staying on the cutting edge of technology in the contracting trade.  "The pace of this industry keeps getting faster, " says Taylor.  "We must stay on the edge of the latest technologies to ensure our service department continues to grow."  MTI President, Rick Bushey, agrees:   "Jim has been with us for almost five years now, and there's nobody who works harder to understand all the facets of service."

Jim, who says that customer satisfaction upon completion of complex tasks is the best part of his job, spent four years in the U.S. Air Force before coming to MTI.  He likes to spend his free time at his cabin in Escanaba, Mich.

Steve Peterson, Vice President & Manager Piping Division

"The business just seems to grow by itself.  The future looks great," says MTI vice president and steamfitting superintendent Steve Peterson.  A 16 year  member of the Local 400, Peterson has become an integral member of the MTI team.  "The energy and expertise that Steve brings to to the table are irreplaceable, " says MTI President, Rick Bushy.   "In a lot of ways, Steve Peterson has gotten us to the level we are at today."

When Steve's not busy with MTI business, he likes to be doing anything outdoors.  "I really like outdoor activity; I can find some kind of outdoor sport any time of year.  I rarely watch TV...unless it's football" Despite Steve's hectic work schedule, he says a sense of humor is an important element of MTI.  "Our staff is always helpful and friendly anytime you call the office."
